*Diagnosis” is the 1st in a series of 5. Below is a description of what inspired the work.

When cells turn rogue and proliferate at an abnormally high rate they become cancerous and start forming tumors that encroach upon the internal landscape of the body. The ensuing battle of dominance and subordination inside a person’s body during the advanced stages of cancer, and the psychological geography of this terminal disease is what inspired this series of 5 mixed media drawings. The series investigates the competition between healthy and rogue cells, and the mentally and physically exhausting battle that takes place during stages of terminal cancer. As cancer cells grow uncontrollably, as they take over and physically accumulate mass, the rest of the body diminishes and life-sustaining systems shut down. Does the person’s sense of self and identity diminish too? Fascinated and disturbed by the psychological and biological processes of cancer, this work addresses the personal impact of this deadly disease and attempts to investigate the layers of grief that begin to unfold first with diagnosis, then during treatment and finally, or not, with the resignation of impending death.
